  A search engine is a website that allows you to search for items in its index. The index is created by the SE's spiders going out and finding information on the internet. The SE then compiles this data and presents it to the searcher. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are the largest search engines in the market today.

SEM
  Oftentimes known as the combination of an SEO Professional and a PPC Campaign manager.
     
Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization  
SEMPO
  Non-Profit organization with the goal of increasing knowledge about SEM worldwide.
     
Search Engine Optimization  
SEO
  The act of locating, researching, submitting, and positioning a web site within the proper search engines for maximum exposure and effectiveness.
     
Search Engine Optimizer  
SEO
  Someone who performs Search Engine Optimization. A SEO Professional will rarely have the need for PPC campaigns except in the short term.
     
Search Engine Placement  
SEP
  The position your website is found in the SERPs. If you do a search for XYZ, and your website is listed in the sixth position, you would have a SEP of 6.

  The act of altering a web site's coding to perform well in organic or natural search results.

  When you perform a search on the website of a search engine, the results that you get from your search are called the Search Engine Results Pages.

  Most common core internet protocol used to transfer e-mails between servers.

  XML based protocol used for invoking web services and exchanging structured data on the internet.

SPAM
  SPAM (Not the substance made by Hormel) is basically electronically engineered junk. It can be in the form of unsolicited e-mails or in the case of search engines, it is the act of trying to fool them into giving a website a higher position than it deserves.
     
Sender Policy Framework  
SPF
  Protocol used to eliminate e-mail forgeries.
     
Structured Query Language  
SQL
  Relational database query language developed by IBM that is compatible with HTML and XML.
     
Server Side Includes  
SSI
  Simple scripting language that tells a server to include specific information into a webpage that is being accessed. Often used for simple things like today's date or the date the file was last modified.
     
Secured Socket Layer  
SSL
  Application layer protocol created by Netscape for managing the security of message transmissions in a network. SSL uses the public-and-private key encryption system from RSA, which also includes the use of a digital certificate. Most conventional web browsers now support SSL.
